Choose the exact episode first
A subtitle track is tied to a particular video edition. Select the correct season and episode before looking at language settings. A recap, extended cut or special can use a different timeline from the regular episode.
English subtitles and English audio are different
Subtitles put dialogue on screen. Dubbed audio replaces the spoken track. Captions may describe sounds and identify speakers as well. Check the language menu on your chosen viewing edition for the combination you want.
Make captions readable across the room
Where the player offers subtitle styling, try a larger size and a background or outline. Test the result during a bright scene. Text that looks comfortable on a laptop can be difficult to follow on a distant television.
Fix timing before changing the movie
If the player supports an offset, adjust it in small steps. If the captions drift again, try another track for that edition. A track prepared for a different cut cannot always be repaired with one timing change.
Check offline languages too
If you download an episode inside a viewing app, test its audio and caption options before travelling. The languages available while connected are not always the same as those included in the saved download.
